Landscape Level Ecological Mapping of Northern Alaska (NOAK) and Field Site Photography - 2014 Update (Archived)

Archive Message: This data has been updated and the most current version is available at: http://catalog.northslopescience.org/catalog/entries/4724 Or use link below (Final Ecological Mapping Dataset and Permafrost Interpretation).

Use link below for final version of geospatial information (geodatabase or shapefile) that includes permafrost interpretation and additional recoding.

Note: This 2014 update corrects coding errors identified in the 2012 revision however further revisions are available via link below.

To aid in assessment of ecological, landscape, and climate change in northern Alaska, the 2006 ecological landscape map for northern Alaska was updated. The 2012 revisions focused on completing the incompletely mapped portion of the southern NPRA, improving mapping of glacial and outwash deposits within the Brooks Foothills, and improving consistency with existing surficial and bedrock geology maps in northern Alaska. The revisions resulted in 533 ecological subsections, nested within 55 ecosections and 14 ecoregions covering 413,089 km2.

Attributes for the map polygons in an ArcMap geodatabase include information on physiography, generalized geology, lithology, soil landscapes, ecological landscapes, elevation, and climate. The attributes allow production of derived map products such as physiography, generalized geology, and ecological landscapes.

Products from this mapping analysis were integrated within a web-base map visualization tool with orthoimagery and approximately 14,400 field site photographs. The photos provide site specific visual information regarding landcover and condition which can assist in a better understanding of expected site conditions within the general ecological landscape definitions.
